چکیده

Air quality monitoring is extremely important as air pollution has a direct impact on human health. In this paper we introduce a low-power and low-cost mobile sensing system for participatory air quality monitoring. In contrast to traditional stationary air pollution monitoring stations, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of GasMobile, a small and portable measurement system based on off-the-shelf components and suited to be used by a large number of people. Vital to the success of participatory sensing applications is a high data quality. We improve measurement accuracy by (i) exploiting sensor readings near governmental measurement stations to keep sensor calibration up to date and (ii) analyzing the effect of mobility on the accuracy of the sensor readings to give user advice on measurement execution. Finally, we show that it is feasible to use GasMobile to create collective high-resolution air pollution maps.

Participatory Urban Monitoring from your Car

Detailed on-line measurements of city air quality are necessary to support compliance with air quality standards and emission strategy developments and to inform both policy makers and the general public in a timely manner. Current approaches to pollution monitoring, however, rely on very small numbers of stationary nodes. Providing detailed air quality information is a particularly hard challe...

Participatory Patterns in an International Air Quality Monitoring Initiative

The issue of sustainability is at the top of the political and societal agenda, being considered of extreme importance and urgency. Human individual action impacts the environment both locally (e.g., local air/water quality, noise disturbance) and globally (e.g., climate change, resource use). Urban environments represent a crucial example, with an increasing realization that the most effective...

Coordinating Measurements for Air Pollution Monitoring in Participatory Sensing Settings

Environmental monitoring is important, as it allows authorities to understand the impact of potentially harmful environmental phenomena, such as air pollution, noise or temperature, on public health. To achieve this effectively, participatory sensing is a promising paradigm for large-scale data collection. In this approach, ordinary citizens (non-expert contributors) collect environmental data ...

Indoor air pollution as an issue of nonattention in Nairobi’s informal settlements

58 percent of Nairobi’s population live in slums under extremely poor and unhealthy conditions. In these settlements, pneumonia is one of the top causes of health issues and deaths among children and adults, for which indoor air pollution is a known contributor. Yet, the topic of indoor air pollution receives no attention. Regulatory frameworks and budgets for indoor air pollution do not exist ...

Indoor air quality monitoring in urban areas using Smart Sensing Technology

Recently, indoor air quality has attracted the attention of policymakers and researchers as a critical issue like that of external air pollution. Indoor air quality is more important as people spend time longer indoors than outdoors. Indoor environments are closed compared to external environments providing less opportunity for the pollutants to dilute. The emissions contain many substances tha...
